Stigmata of recent haemorrhage in diagnosis and prognosis of upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
In 277 consecutive episodes of suspected upper gastrointestinal bleeding, lesions bearing stigmata of recent haemorrhage (stigmata) were found by endoscopy in 110 (47%) out of 233 patients who were judged to have bled; 78 (33%) had lesions without stigmata, and in 45 (19%) no lesion was seen. Results in 176 entirely unselected admissions for upper gastrointestinal bleeding were similar.Forty-ei...
متن کاملA Psychobiocultural Perspective on Stigmata
Stigmata, wounds resembling those of Christ, have been reported since the 13 th century. The wounds typically appear in association with visions following prolonged fasting. This paper argues that self-starvation holds the key to understanding this unique event. Stigmata may result from self-mutilation occurring during dissociation, phenomena precipitated in part by dietary constriction, Psycho...
متن کاملReligious stigmata as malingering artifact

Disease simulation can be motivated, among other things, by illegal purposes, to escape from civil duties or prison sentences, for example, or to exploit specific situations in order to receive a range of benefits. In such cases, the simulator is fully aware of his or her ...
متن کاملStigmata in Sequential Monte Carlo
iii Abstract Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) has, since being " rediscovered " in the early 1990's, become one of the most important inference techniques in machine learning. It enjoys a prominent place in statistics, robotics, quantum physics, as well as control and other industrial applications. SMC methods represent probability densities as a dicrete set of N Dirac masses called particles. This...
متن کاملCutaneous Stigmata of Occult Spinal Dysraphism
We describe a 4-year-old Hispanic boy with a dermal pit and an overlying macular vascular malformation in the lumbosacral area. Magnetic resonance imaging of the region revealed an intraspinal lesion at L1-L2. A fibrous tract was excised. A benign lipoma intrinsic to the roots of the cauda equina was noted at surgery. The cutaneous stigmata of occult spinal dysraphisms are reviewed.
